I agree, it would be hard to find out if this is a real thing or not. I think since they rank very old sites higher it might be in the code, but its hard to say.

I think that the sandbox has to do more with link weight and quality of links. Thinking logically ( I maybe wrong) if Google has a filter in order to give weight to links then those links will have little weight initially so the site does not rank for some time. After some x amount of time those links get some weight then rankings occur. It is just plain speculation but it has some common sense in it.

Just been looking into this myself as a few of my new sites have been dropping in and out of the serps. Also read that there is a potential positive sandbox where by if you haven’t done any form of link building your site gets a really good ranking hence allowing people to naturally link build to new, unique and good quality content, hence giving the new site the chance to prove its worth!
